Cape Hatteras on North Carolina's Coast is known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic because of the unusually large number of shipwrecks. The waters are especially turbulent due to the intersection of three currents:the cold Labrador, warm Gulf Stream and Chesapeake. On May 17,1918,the Mirlo British Tanker was torpedoed by a German U Boat in these notoriously dangerous waters. The Chicamacomico Coast Guard surfmen rescued 42 sailors from the blazing oil covered waters in a 1,000 lb wooden oar boat.
